TOT SCHOOL: APRIL SHOWERS

We started off the month of April with a week of APRIL SHOWERS - a theme around RAIN! The weather was so nice here but yet I found myself actually wanting it to rain (weird, I know!). Here's some photos of the activities we did and don't forget to grab the FREE weekly calendar and materials list at the bottom of the post (please note that some of the links are affiliate links, and at no additional cost to you, I will earn a small commission if you decide to make a purchase after clicking through the link).

On the calendar you will find a brief description of each activity, the links to the activities and crafts, as well as books we read and additional resources.

Share any questions or comments you have below. I'd love to hear and see how you are incorporating these activities at home with your little ones! Please follow me and tag me on Instagram @toddler_fundamentals and hashtag your photos #todfunaprilshowers

Also, on my Instagram posts and stories you can find a detailed description of the activities.

GROSS MOTOR ACTIVITIES
I used sidewalk chalk to draw puddles outside. In each one I wrote a letter in his name. I gave him an umbrella and he put on his rainbows and outside we went! I called out a letter and he ran and jumped in that puddle.
I set two bowls about 10 feet away from each other and added some blue water gems to one of the bowls. He had to use a spoon and transfer the gems from the bowls. He quickly learned that he couldn't go as fast as he wanted to or else the gems would fall off.

FINE MOTOR ACTIVITIES & ART
I cut two pieces of blue construction paper into fourths and then used two pieces of each color and folded them to make a crease. Next, I let him use the paint bottle to squeeze a few paint blobs on to one side of the paper. Then we closed, pressed and opened! His face was priceless! After they dried, I asked him what he saw and wrote it at the bottom of each one with a marker.

We love science experiments AND water so this was the perfect activity for my little guy! I filled a mason jar about 3/4 the way full with water and topped it with some shaving cream. Then I set out a small bowl with blue colored water and he used his eye dropper to drop the blue water on to the shaving cream. We talked about how it looked like it was raining.
He used washable markers to color a coffee filter. Next, he used his spray bottle to get it wet (he loves to use this). When it dried, I folded it in half and he added the handle.
On a piece of white construction paper, I drew a cloud and letter "raindrops" below. We're working on the letters in his name, so these are the ones I wrote. I cut raindrops out of a blue foam sticker sheet and wrote letters on them using a permanent marker. He had to match the letters together and he got in some fine motor practice by peeling off the backs of the raindrops.
I laid out some cotton swabs and wrote the letters in his name (NOTE: the marker kept pulling the fibers off the swab so I would suggest gently writing the letters if you can). Then I laid a bow of blue water next to his area and he used his eye dropper to squeeze "rain" on the letters as I called them out.

SENSORY PLAY & ART
To a large bin, we added some blue water, sticks, rocks and mulch pieces from outside. We also added in some animals and people and a few cups with holes in the bottom (to make it rain). He explored and made it rain on the animals.
I cut a wrapping paper tube in half and he colored one of them. Next, I taped off one end and he added some twisted pipe cleaners and beans/rice. I taped off the other end and he made some music with his rain sticks!

I added a big pile of shaving cream (clouds) to a bin. We dropped in some blue water gems and he used his fine motor tools to collect the gems (raindrops).

THEMED SNACKS

I sliced a banana and shaped into a cloud at the top of the plate and then scattered blueberries for raindrops.
I cut two slices of bread to look like a cloud and then added our sandwich items (we made a ham and cheese sandwich). I used a pizza slicer to make the lightning bolt and then scattered blueberries for raindrops.
I cut an uncrushable in half and stuck a bendy straw in them for the handles and added blueberries.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

After we read the book, It Looked Like Spilt Milk, we laid outside, looked up at the clouds and talked about what we saw.
